Lipid Panel
What it measures
A standard lipid panel reports total cholesterol, HDL ('good') cholesterol, LDL ('bad') cholesterol, and triglycerides. Used to estimate cardiovascular risk and monitor lipid-lowering treatment.
When it’s ordered
Annual cardiovascular risk screening, statin monitoring, family history of heart disease, evaluation of established cardiovascular disease.
Medicare coverage
Governed by NCD 190.23 (Lipid Panel). Acceptable diagnoses include hyperlipidemia (E78.x), cardiovascular disease (I25.x), diabetes (E11.x), and many others. Frequency is typically once per 5 years for screening; more often when monitoring an established condition.
Typical price
Medicare allowable around $13–18. Commercial cash prices range from $30 to $200.
One thing to watch
Z00.00 ('routine exam') alone is often insufficient. Pair it with E78.5 or a specific cardiovascular code.
